So this last week I’ve developed a rationale and hypotheses based on sleep and food choices…which ironically caused me to have hardly any sleep and changed my food choices and inspired this post! We all know sleep is massively important for recovery both physically and mentally. But let’s look at what a lack of sleep does to our hunger. Acute sleep deprivation increases the brain’s response to food’s hedonic properties, making foods more rewarding). 12 men underwent fMRI scans whilst looking at images of high and low calorie foods, after both a night of sleep and a night of no sleep. The results showed higher activation of the right anterior cingulate cortex (region involved in food reward) following sleep deprivation regardless of the calorie content of the foods or hunger levels pre-scan. Ghrelin is an appetite related hormone that makes us hungry. In a study which gave 9 men either a night of 7hrs, 4.5hrs sleep or a night of total sleep deprivation found plasma ghrelin levels were 22% higher after no sleep than after 7hrs sleep. After 4.5hrs there was an intermediate effect on ghrelin levels, as you can see in the figure. Less sleep resulted in more ghrelin and this resulted in higher hunger levels. Finally, 57 participants (80% of which were women) had their sleep tracked through the use of an app. The results showed that those individuals who rated themselves as sleepy wanted high fat sweet foods more. Sleep deprivation increased cravings for unhealthy foods as a means of self medication, the increases energy of these foods may serve as a compensatory mechanism for the lack of sleep. So, sleep deprivation makes foods more appealing, it increases our hunger hormones and it also increases our cravings and makes us want energy taste foods more. All of which are likely to make it more difficult to follow your dietary goals. Now please excuse me whilst I go back to bed.
